Green Lantern (2011)

Despite what people said about the trailers, I thought they looked pretty good. Sadly, I can't say that about the movie.

Green Lantern revolves around Hal Jordan, a young fighter pilot who suddenly finds himself in possession of a green power ring and a member of the Green Lantern Corps (an intergalactic peacekeeping force for the entire universe), when the ring's former wearer Abin Sur dies. The rings choose the closest and most suitable candidate, that is, one who is strong of will and able to overcome fear, and can create hard light constructs limited only by the wearer's imagination.

Throw in disgruntled scientist Hector Hammond who develops telekinesis and mind powers after being infected by Parallax via proxy (he was autopsying Abin Sur when it happened), and the main villain, Parallax himself, a massive smoke monster creature that sucks out life essences from other beings by sensing their fear, and you have the perfect situation for the hero to prove himself, defeat the bad guys, save the world, and what befits an awesome movie, right?

Eh, not so much.

So what went wrong?
  1. Far too much time was on character development at the beginning, so much that it actually got boring. Some scenes we could've done without, since in general pre-attainment of superhero powers usually involves the depictions of 'cocky', 'arrogant', and 'prat', and it's pretty much implied that Hal and Carol have history from the way they argue. Not really necessary to go further.
  2. One villain two many. [Geddit?]. Hammond was perfectly capable of being a major villain himself, since he had quite a bit of screentime, and Peter Sarsgaard was effectively creepy as the softspoken scientist. Despite changing Parallax's nature (he's the embodiment of fear in the comics), Parallax could've been saved for the next movie, with Hammond serving as a herald in the first movie.
  3. The story's a bit disjointed, and some parts didn't make sense. The ring only warns of imminent danger, so how did Hal know that Hammond was causing a ruckus at that underground bunker/lab place? How did Hal know where Carol was being held captive? Why have Hal make that big speech imploring the Guardians to help him when they're not gonna? What the hell is the Yellow Power Battery doing within range of Oa? And the Guardians saw one of their own fall to fear's corruptive power, and yet they agree too easily to Sinestro's request to forge a yellow ring! Thereby continuing that good ol' movie stereotype that people in high places are most often idiots that never learn. Sigh.
  4. Not enough of Sinestro. In the comics, Sinestro is eventually sacked as a Green Lantern and starts his own Corp, where its members use yellow rings. The Sinestro Corps is the Green's most direct enemy, due to their rings' weakness towards the color yellow. In this movie, Sinestro seems like a decent enough person with no hints of a darker, twisted side enough to warrant him putting on the yellow ring. Fanservice.
What was good?
  1. Cast and chemistry. The only thing was that Ryan Reynolds seemed a bit restrained in this one, humor-wise, but other than that no complaints. Also, Peter Sarsgaard.
  2. Crapload of character development actually got us vested in the characters, especially Hal. It was also realistic in the sense that Hal was at odds with himself in attempting to save the world. Unfortunately, it served to hurt the movie's flow and pacing.
  3. The part when Carol recognises Hal despite him wearing his facemask. "You don't think I would recognize you 'cause I can only see your cheekbones?!" Best. Line. Ever.
  4. Oa, homeworld of the GL Corps. It looks stunning, and we got to see the Guardians, the Green Power Battery, Yellow Power Battery (just 'cuz it don't make sense don't mean it don't look cool), alien creatures, etc. Just 'wow'.
  5. Light constructs in general. Whatever Hal or the other GLs thought up looked simply awesome, and definitely worthy of the term 'wearer's imagination'. That whole racetrack bit? Wicked.
  6. Amanda Waller FTW!

I give it a 5. Green Lantern had so much potential to be awesome; sadly, the lousy storyflow and double-trouble did nothing to help.

Rumor round-up!

Well, I'm guessing y'all heard about the Spider-man reboot? Just a recap, the casting and director slots are now open considering that original director Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire backed out of production, taking EVERYONE ELSE with them.

Rumors are flying that the REAL reason why Raimi and Co. quit was because of, get this: Avatar. Apparently, Raimi was blown away after watching the furriesAvatar and wanted A LOT OF CGI for Spidey 4, which would've made the already overdue film overbudget, and that's why he and the studio parted ways.

Aside from that, the big question now is, who will be playing the new Peter Parker?
(who's supposed to be in his teenage years since they're gonna milk this franchise for even MORE than its worth)

See him brood. As if Twilight fans need to eff the world up more.

In this article from EW, other names include Zac Efron, Daniel Radcliffe, Shia LaBeouf and even Jaden Smith. Out of the whole bunch, Shia LaBeouf would be the only one I'd pay to see, or even waste two hours (-plus, depending on film's running time) on, and that's saying a lot.

[And besides, the "nununununu" always makes me laugh.]

Other news during the week / period:
  • Blake Lively is now Love Interest, and Peter Sarsgaard in talks to play Dr Hector Hammond, a villain, in Green Lantern. We still don't know who's gonna play Sinestro (who eventually turns to the Dark Side, but only probably at the end of the movie), though Jackie Earle Haley is still in the running. Sherlock Holmes' Mark Strong is also being mentioned here and there, and though I'm rooting for RorschachHaley, between the two, Strong has the height. Whatever happened to Hugo Weaving? His name kinda dropped off the minute Haley's showed up.
  • Transformers 3 to start filming soon, and THEY HAVE NO SCRIPT! Word also on the street is that the third movie will have less robots and more storyline, which I guess means that it'd be a bit like the first movie. I think I'm one of the rare people that enjoyed Transformers 2, and I'm a hesitant about Movie TrĂ©s, as whenever I enjoy the sequel, the threequel will suck so much ass that it annihilates the entire trilogy (see Spider-man, The Matrix, The Mummy, Terminator, etc.). Director Michael Bay and producer Steven Spielberg is also at odds about whether to film in 3-D (apparently Spielberg L-O-V-E-D Avatar), but I really don't care about that since first time is always 2-D for me.
Other than the above, nothing could really beat Spider-man 4's news, so that's about it from me. I hope to see Legion this weekend, so expect a review up sometime next week! :)

Rorschach = Freddy Krueger = Sinestro??

Talk about iconic characters all the way!

Ain't It Cool is reporting that Jackie Earle Haley is in the lead to land the part of villain Sinestro in the upcoming Green Lantern movie. Sinestro was Hal Jordans' (Ryan Reynolds) mentor, before he went rogue and became the Lantern Corp's arch-nemesis (because he uses yellow, and for some reason, green can't pwnbeat that).

Initially I was thinking on passing on GL (or at least till the trailer comes out), but JEH was Rorschach personified in Watchmen, and he's basically the ONLY reason I'm considering checking out the Nightmare on Elm Street remake.

Hope this turns out in his favour. Can't wait :)

Green Lantern is set for release in 2011.

Green Lantern cast!

And it is no other than Ryan Reynolds.

According to Reuters, Reynolds and his people entered into negotiations with the studio on Friday. The article also mentions the other actors that went in screen testing, namely Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto, and... Justin Timberlake?

Ew.
Out of the latter three names I just mentioned, I was banking on Brad Cooper. Even Jared Leto is too pretty. Whatever happened to Nathan Fillion?

If the deal goes through, (and if I'm not mistaken) Reynolds would be the first actor to play both DC and Marvel characters (Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity, and of course, Deadpool) on-screen.

[He's hot and awesome. *swoon*]

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with Green Lantern lore, so I can't provide any speculation on my part as to who Reynolds will be playing in the movie. The Google says that it will be the famous Hal Jordan, although over on Punch Drunk Critics, they reckon it might be the younger Kyle Rayner.

I'd love to see the universe explode if there's a Marvel / DC movie crossover. As of now, I'll just have to rely on YouTube ;)
